Whenever you have a spur of the moment get together and don’t have time to cook anything, what is the one thing you can buy that everyone will like? Pizza. Have you ever actually met anyone that doesn’t like pizza? Sure, some people don’t like anchovies or olives. Some people just want plain cheese. But, by and large, you are going to please the majority of people with a pizza. Why is pizza so darn beloved? Well it’s delicious for one and it’s easily customizable for another. I would foster a guess and say that pizza’s popularity is due to three things. The two reasons mentioned above and the ease at which one can find pizza. As of my writing this there are around 75,000 pizza restaurants in the US. So, unless you live in a seriously remote area, you can probably throw a rock and hit a pizza place. That’s not even counting all the frozen pizza you can get at your grocery store. And that brings me to yet another reason pizza is so popular: it is super easy to make at home. I’m talking from the ground up making your own pizza dough and all. Which, if you ask me, is the cornerstone of a great pizza. The great thing about this dough recipe is it works with all kinds of pizza as we will certainly show you.
I like to use type 00 flour from King Arthur for my pizza dough but I have also had lots of success with regular bread flour. As far as baking projects go, pizza dough is easily one of the most forgiving. Since we’re gonna be rolling this bad boy out pretty thin, if it doesn’t leaven just right, it’s not a terrible tragedy.
Some of the pizzas we’ve made with this dough recipe are a Pepperoni and Feta pizza, a hot Soppressata and Fresh Mozzarella pizza, a Margherita pizza, and this really cool French Onion Roast Beef pizza. The latter we made just to be a little crazy… and ’cause we had a bunch of leftovers from our French Onion Roast Beef Poboy. The other pizzas use a super simple very yummy homemade pizza sauce which we may share one day. Hope you enjoy making your own pizza!
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon of yeast
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 cup of warm water
- 3 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil + 1 teaspoon
Instructions
Combine yeast, sugar, and water in a measuring cup and mix. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for about ten minutes until it’s nice and foamy.
Combine flour, salt, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl of a stand mixer and mix well.
Add water mixture to flour and mix until a soft smooth ball forms.
Turn dough out on a floured surface and knead until smooth. Form dough into a ball.
Grease a large bowl with remaining olive oil. Place dough in the bowl and allow it to rise for about 90 minutes. The dough should at least double in size at this time.
At this point, you roll the dough to whatever thickness and size you please.
Top your pizza dough with whatever toppings make you happy. If you need some ideas, check out some of these pizzas I’ve made with this dough.
