Jambon Beurre

This sandwich is so easy and delicious I could easily eat one for lunch or dinner everyday, if it wasn’t swimming in carbs of course. The Jambon Beurre, as it’s called in France, (I’ve also seen it called the Parisian on menus and the internet) is essentially just ham and butter on a baguette. I have also seen the sandwich before with cheese and cornichons so I went that route.

Comté cheese seems to be the most popular (for a very good reason after tasting it). So, Comté it was.

A fresh baguette is a must. If you haven’t a good bakery nearby, I have my French Bread recipe here. I  struggled with my french bread for a long time and even though this recipe is as good as gotten, I still have problems from time to time.

Just like the bread and cheese, spring for the best ham you can get. I baked a little pre-cured and smoked ham this time. Deli ham will work if time isn’t on your side. If I didn’t mention before, this sandwich goes great with some french onion soup (recipe forthcoming soon). 


Ingredients

  • 1 loaf french baguette (Store bought or make your own with my French Bread Recipe here)
  • Ham (thinly sliced)
  • Comte cheese (thinly sliced) 
  • Cornichons (cut in half) 
  • Butter (sliced into pats) 

(I haven’t included any amounts because the amount of meat and cheese one puts on a sandwich is no one’s business but their own.)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cut the desired piece of bread off of the loaf, then slice in half.

Top each slice with a few pats of butter and a few slices of ham.

Then, bake for just a few minutes until butter is melted. (I don’t melt the cheese on this sandwich but that’s just a personal preference. If you wanna bake with the cheese, have a ball.)

When butter is melted and ham is warm, take the sandwich from the oven. Add cheese and cornichons and enjoy.
